Passive and active natural ventilations systems, in the right climate zone, can be an effective way to reduce mechanical cooling costs in appropriate buildings. These systems have been introduced into educational environments to reduce mechanical cooling and ventilation hours in an effort to reduce building energy use.

While the design concept isn’t new, current construction practices, components, and integration with the building automation system have presented challenges to design & construction teams who aim for long term successful operation of these systems.

Presenter: John M. Herboth

Bio: John Herboth is a senior commissioning engineer at Affiliated Engineers Inc. He started commissioning career in late 2007 at NorthWest Engineering Service Inc and has 15 years’ experience collaborating with project teams and commissioning buildings. He has specialized in fire life safety and building envelope systems. He currently serves as the northwest chapter president of the building commissioning association (BCxA) and believes that sharing project successes, failures, and best practices is a professional duty.

Learning Objectives:

1) Identify and describe both passive and active natural ventilation system design, construction, and operation concepts

2) Identify areas of potential concern for passive and active natural ventilation system design, its components, its construction, and long term operation

3) Identify best practices for the design, construction, and operation in passive and active natural ventilation systems

4) Describe the responsibilities and implications for operations personnel in identifying and solving passive and active ventilation system problems
